OmniPage Ultimate introduces support for the widely-used electronic book file type ePub. Three saving converters are designed to deliver content in a form that typical mobile devices can handle. All three converters by default decolumnize input text, retain bullets and numbering, cross-references and links to footnotes, apply first line indents to paragraphs, ignore headers and footers and transfer graphics with their original appearance (black-and-white, grayscale, color) and resolution.
Choose Save to File in the OmniPage Toolbox, click the saving button, choose an ePub file type and click Options to view the full list of retained or dropped elements.
The three output file types are:
ePub: This retains as much formatting as possible: font styling, sizes, attributes etc. It allows the text to flow, suitable for resizing in the mobile device.
ePub simple: This drops as much formatting as possible, but allows text to flow. Many smart mobile devices analyze incoming texts and apply some formatting to them, for example, making headings bold and larger.
ePub for poems: This is almost the same as ePub, so formatting is retained, but the line breaks from the original document are conserved. This is useful for poetry, word lists, recipes etc.
Bulleted and numbered lists receive a hard line break at the end of each item, whether or not their retention is enabled. You do not need to choose ‘Insert line breaks’ for correct handling of these items.
If the settings for any of these converters suit your needs, just save the file. If not, choose the converter closest to your needs, click Options and adjust the settings. These settings apply only to the current export. To apply them to future exporting with this converter, select the checkbox Make changes permanent. To have them always available, click New and make a custom converter.
When saving to the ePub formats the choice ‘View result’ is not available, so there is no sense in choosing an application for the viewing.
Support for the file types .LIT and .eBook is discontinued.
Experiment with the different converters and settings, to see which combination works best for your mobile device. Then save those settings to a custom converter.
