Install PaperPort 14

PaperPort installation includes the following elements that are installed in a single installation process:

The following prerequisites may be installed, depending on your system environment:

The installation program provides easy step-by-step instructions on screen to install the software.

  1. In the folder where you downloaded the Kofax PaperPort product files to your computer, double-click Autorun.exe.

  2. Select your language from the list of available languages.

  3. Click Start installation.

  4. On the Welcome to the InstallShield Wizard screen, click Next.

  5. On the Setup Type screen, select Complete or Custom installation, and click Next.

    • Complete: installs the standard product components.

    • Custom: select this option if you want to add your own folders to the supplied PaperPort Desktop folders during installation.

  6. Click Install to start the installation.

The Autorun installer provides the following additional installation settings:

    • Create PaperPort Icon on the Desktop

This places a PaperPort program icon on the desktop of the currently logged-in user.

    • Enable Windows Context Menu within PaperPort Context Menu

This is an option only in the Professional version of PaperPort, turned on by default. With this, Windows Context menu items can appear and can be invoked directly from PaperPort for the selected PaperPort files and folders.

  7. Click Finish to exit the InstallShield Wizard.

Upgrade from PaperPort 14 to PaperPort 14 Professional

Starting the AutoRun installer of PaperPort 14 Professional keeps your previous Scanning Profiles and initiates the uninstallation of the previous PaperPort from the system afterwards.

Register PaperPort 14

At the end of installation, you will be asked to fill out an electronic form to register your copy of PaperPort.

Launch PaperPort 14

You must launch the main PaperPort application after installation, before attempting to use other PaperPort applications, such as ImageViewer.

Uninstall PaperPort 14

For a complete uninstallation, all PaperPort components should be removed one at a time. The components to uninstall are as follows:

Note: Removing only the Image Printer and/or the PDF Viewer will cause PaperPort to not function correctly. For example, PDF Viewer affects FormTyper, and PDF Create affects the save and combine to PDF functionality in PaperPort.

Use this procedure to uninstall Kofax PaperPort from your computer.

  1. Select Add or Remove Programs from the Control Panel.

  2. Select Kofax PaperPort 14.

  3. Click Uninstall.

  4. Repeat this for the remaining components.

  5. You might need to restart your computer to complete the removal.

Alternatively, go to Start menu > Uninstall PaperPort 14.

Uninstallation failure

Should the uninstallation of Kofax PaperPort 14 fail for any reason, you can clean up your system from all references to this product by using the Remover.exe application. This tool is in the PaperPort\Utility folder (PDFCreate\Tools folder for PDF Create) in the PaperPort installation package. After running this executable, reboot the machine and the component will be uninstalled.

Note: On a machine with restricted user rights, log in to the machine with administrator rights before running this utility.

Cloud connection

Evernote Client

In PaperPort, the Send To Link bar is extended with an Evernote link to be able to upload and download attached documents. The Evernote connection can be configured through the Send To Link bar.

Scanner support

TWAIN and WIA drivers

PaperPort 14 supports scanners that are controlled by TWAIN or WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) scanner drivers. PaperPort 14 supports any fully TWAIN- or WIA-compliant scanner or other input device that can supply at least a binary (black-and-white) image in a supported resolution (200 to 600 dpi). The recommended maximum scan resolution is 400 dpi.

If any scanning problem occurs with PaperPort, start by testing whether you are able to scan into another scanner-enabled imaging application. Use the Microsoft® Paint application to test WIA and any imaging application from some other vendor to test TWAIN.

ISIS drivers

In addition to scanning via TWAIN or WIA, PaperPort 14 also supports ISIS (Image and Scanner Interface Specification) scanning.

If any scanning problem occurs with PaperPort, start by testing whether you are able to scan into another ISIS-supported application.

Scanner Setup Wizard

PaperPort 14 includes a Scanner Setup Wizard that will automatically test and optimize your scanner for use with PaperPort 14. You can find the Scanner Setup Wizard shortcut next to the PaperPort 14 shortcut in the Windows Start menu. You can also launch it at any time by choosing the Select button on the "Scan or Get Photo" pane (Scan Settings on the Desktop ribbon). The Scanner Setup Wizard is launched automatically after installation when you first attempt to scan. This ensures that your scanner is optimized before you start scanning documents.

Using more than one scanner in PaperPort

If you have more than one scanner installed on your computer, you may use the Scanner Setup Wizard to use those scanners with PaperPort. Use the Select button on the "Scan or Get Photo" pane (Scan Settings on the Desktop ribbon).

Scanner compatibility

If you are having issues with your scanner, contact the scanner manufacturer for assistance. Most scanner manufacturers have web sites that provide the latest scanner drivers, FAQs and other information about their products.

Known issues

PDF Portfolio not supported

PaperPort 14 does not support PDF Portfolio, so you cannot open documents that were created with this functionality.

Installation

PaperPort 14 does not support Citrix or Windows Terminal Services (WTS) environments and the installation on Shared Network Drives.

Limitations with PDF image editing in PDF Viewer

Editing an image in PDF files in ImageViewer has some limitations; this has been primarily designed for simple image-only PDF files. More complex PDF files may yield unexpected results. If you do not know the origin of your PDF file and you get unexpected results when editing images embedded in a PDF, it is most likely a complex PDF with image effects already applied.

Features not supported in Image View/ImageViewer but supported in PDF Viewer

The primary PDF viewer application in PaperPort is PDF Viewer. The following is a list of features supported only in PDF Viewer.

Power PDF

When using Power PDF, image editing is started in a slightly different way than in PDF Viewer. Instead of the "Select Image" tool, use the "Edit Object" tool to select the image. Then the shortcut menu will offer "Edit image".

Editing and saving certain files (DOC, XLS) will relocate the thumbnail on the PaperPort Desktop

Some applications may create temporary files when saved, resulting in the thumbnail being moved by PaperPort to the end of the file listing.

MAX file support and conversion

Kofax recommends that you use PDF instead of the MAX file format. MAX files generated by PaperPort 10 or above are supported in read-only mode, for viewing purposes only. To be able to edit MAX files, you need to convert them to PDF first.

The MAX to PDF converter tool is located in the Start menu next to the PaperPort application, or can be accessed using the cvmaxpdf.exe in the Program Files.

PDF Security

When stacking a group of items into a single PDF, if the source document has a permissions password set, the program will still ask you for the owner password even if the permission settings should not require it.

Third-party acknowledgments
