Backup routines

To protect your installation from damage caused by power failure, disk crashes, software errors, incorrect user changes, and so on, it is important to set up routines for backing up program and data files. There are many backup systems on the market. As FORMS’ databases can be quite large, a high-performance system is recommended.

We recommend that you back up FORMS’ databases daily, and that you save the copies for one week. If you use FORMS day and night, we recommend that you make backups both morning and evening.

One copy per week, from the same day each week, should be kept for one month. Complete monthly backups should be kept for 3 months.

Before making a backup, finish all FORMS processes. Store the backup media in a fireproof safe.

We also recommend that you keep a record of new forms defined between backups. The record book should also contain copies of run statistics, batch reports, and other information necessary for restarting from the backup.

Database server

Use SQL Server Management Studio (in SQL Server 2005) to back up the database. Alternatively, use a backup program that can communicate with Microsoft SQL Server.

Important: For additional essential information about maintaining and backing up your database server, refer to Installing and Configuring Microsoft SQL Server for use with ReadSoft Products. (Nothing happens when I click the link.)

Non-database files

Other files, not considered part of FORMS’ databases, must also be preserved in case of system failure. See File types in FORMS for more information.
