Field help text

For image, mark, selection, character, object and barcode fields, you can type a text that you want to appear as a prompt or reminder when you verify the field. (Show me what it looks like.) You do this in an edit box on the Advanced tab of the Field dialog.

A typical field help text describes the field (for example, "This is a 7-digit customer number") and helps you to verify the field correctly.

This is very useful when no information about the field content is available during verification, such as when you use the fast verify mode.

Another idea, especially applicable to indexed mark fields, is to type a help text that describes the significance of the field. For example, when a series of mark fields is used to indicate an age group, then one help text might be "24-30" and another "31-36".

This is useful if you will be using SPSS statistics analysis program to examine your data. For unindexed fields, help texts are used as variable labels in SPSS. For indexed fields, help texts are used as value labels. This is particularly useful for indexed mark fields.

It is possible to format the text to some extent.
