Advanced Edit Ribbons

The following ribbons, menus and panels are available in Advanced Edit mode.

File Menu

This has almost the same content as in Review mode. The Advanced Editor item changes to Prevent Further Edits with the same functionality as the Finalize tool in the Home ribbon. If you click Review Mode in that ribbon, this menu item becomes Advanced Edit mode and it returns the file from Review mode to Advanced Edit mode.

Home ribbon

This ribbon has many groups, some might be hidden. Click the blue outward facing arrowheads on the left or right of the ribbon area to see hidden groups

Finalize group

The Finalize tool processes all changes made in Advanced edit mode, prevents further advanced edits and returns the PDF to review mode. You are advised to do this if the file is to be distributed, because it removes unwanted elements from the file.

The Review Mode tool lets you return the file to that mode temporarily to see its updated appearance. Use the File menu to return to Advanced Edit mode so further editing can be done.

Clipboard group

Has the same tools as in Review mode. Since PDF body text has become editable, the Cut tool does cut selected text, in contrast to Review mode, where only comment or typewriter text can be cut.

Text group

This provides word-processor-like tools to change font, size, attributes (bold, italic, underline...), apply bullets or numbering and set indents. Click Styles to open the Styles panel (see below).

Edit group

Undo and redo actions, select items and use a format painter. These tools can be placed in the Quick Access bar (on the left in the Title bar) to make them more accessible.

Paragraph group

Display the Paragraph dialog box or directly set alignment, borders and shading, line spacing or character spacing (distribution).

Align group

View rulers, grids and gridlines, turn Snap to Grid on or off.

Page Layout group

Define columns, page size and text direction.

Document group

Click Document Map to open its panel in the Panel area (see below), to see and modify the document structure.

Favorites group

The same as in review mode.

Search group

Use a word-processor-like Find and Replace dialog box.

Insert ribbon

Pages group

Insert blanks pages, column, section or page breaks.

Images group

Open the Clip Art or Graphics panel (see below) or browse to insert an image from your file system.

Further groups

Insert links, text boxes, symbols, tables headers, footers and page numbering. Use the Table tool drop-down list to also modify tables already located in the PDF.

View ribbon

This provides a subset of the tools in the View ribbon in Review mode.

Track ribbon

This ribbon provides similar functionality as comments handling and Markup tools in Review mode, but through a word-processor-like interface tracking and reviewing changes.

Help ribbon

Identical to the Help ribbon in Review mode.

The Panel bar in Advanced Edit

The panel area has fewer choices than in Review mode. These are:

Styles: This panel lists all paragraph styles found in the document. Create, delete or modify styles.

Document Map: This panel lists all heading styles found in the document. This has content only if the document contains styles called 'Heading 1', 'Heading 2' etc. It serves only to view the heading hierarchy. Use the Styles panel to make changes.

Graphics: Choose and insert graphics from a library with three categories: Basic shapes, Lines and Stars. A tool allows freehand shapes to be drawn.

Clip Art panel: Identical to the panel in Review mode.

Auto-recovery: Identical to the panel in Review mode.

In Advanced Edit mode the Panel bar does not include the Hand and Select tools. To select items, use the tool at Home > Edit. The Select tool is by default also placed in the Quick Access bar.
