Process Images activity: Binarize image

When configuring a Process Images activity, you can use the Binarize image function to implement an algorithm for binarizing color and half-tone TIFF, MTIFF, or JPEG images.

Warning: The original medium is deleted after binarization.

These settings are available:

Blur type

Select one of these modes:

  • [none] – No blurring.

  • GAUSSIAN – Blurring using two-dimensional Gaussian distribution.

  • SMART – Grid artifacts from scaling or previous thresholding operations are suppressed.

Quick text

Uses an algorithm that is optimized for texts. These settings are available:

  • Background sensitivity – Specify the highest possible value that is lower than any part of the background. This value is used to mask out black noise.

  • Letter and figure thickness – Controls how thick characters or picture fragments must be for proper thresholding. A starting value can be calculated like this:

Add 255 to the value you specified for Background sensitivity and divide by 2.

If fragments are thicker, set Letter and figure thickness to a lower value; if they are thinner, set it higher.

  • Local contrast – Increases the contrast before thresholding. The value must be between 0 and 255. Zero (0) means no increase.

Photo half-tone

Uses an algorithm that is optimized for half-tone images. These settings are available:

  • Orientation in degrees – The orientation of the half-tone grid, measured in degrees relating to horizontal.

  • Distance between black and white dots – The distance measured in pixels from the center of a black pixel within the half-tone grid to a white pixel.

  • Shape of the halftone grid – The shape of the halftone grid. Specify a value between –255 and 255. At the extreme values (–255 and 255), the grid is linear. If you specify zero (0), the grid consists of circles/squares.

Work on front pages only

Select if the function is to be used only on front pages (not on back pages).

Work on empty pages

Select if the processing is applied to media whose Empty flag is set.

Work on multi-TIFF

Select if the function is to be used on multi-TIFF media, too.

Additional medium information

Type a value to save in the image properties. (This text will not be visible on the image.) If additional information already exists there, what you enter here will be separated by a semicolon from the existing information. Example:
