Logging events and errors: Overview

Note: This logging information applies to only Capture Components Administration. For more information on logging in XBOUND (including the ReadSoft Capture Components activities), see XBOUND Help.

You can choose from four logging levels, depending on how many events you want to keep track of. The higher the level of logging selected, the larger the resulting log files:

Error level

Only application errors are logged.

Application level

Only application events are logged:

  • Errors

  • Starting and ending the program

  • Creating and closing the main program windows

  • Opening and closing the program database(s)

Function level

In addition to the application events above, these events are also logged:

  • Menu calls

  • API calls (and events fired)

  • Production events

Object level

In addition to the events included in the application and function levels changes made to program objects (solutions, documents, fields, and so on) are also logged.

Debugging level

In addition to the events included in all of the above levels, these events are also logged:

  • When function calls start and end

  • Exceptions caught

Note: This alternative results in very large log files.

You can also specify whether the log information is stored separately or in the Windows Event log.

The log files have an XML structure so that you can more easily distinguish specific messages, such as errors. You can view these files using Notepad. However, the XML structure is more beneficial when you view them using a web browser or XML viewer.
