Enhancing images after Input

After the Input activity is the Enhance activity.

To select which image enhancement features to apply to images processed in a production task:

  1. Create or open a production task.

  2. Select Activities > Enhance > Image. (Enhance must be selected in the Activities > Selection dialog.)

  3. Select the appropriate options:

    • Auto detect rotation: Automatically detects and corrects rotation of an image according to the selected value. For example, if 90 degrees is selected, any document images rotated 90 degrees are detected and corrected. Text-based checks for documents rotated by 90, 180 and 270 degrees, by extracting random areas of text. However, this method works best with English documents and does not work with eastern alphabets.

    • Deskew: Straightens an image so that it is properly aligned. An image is skewed if the document is not properly aligned horizontally or vertically when it passes through the scanner.

    • Remove black borders: Removes any black borders around the edges of an image. When a document is smaller than the scanned area, a black border appears around the document. This option removes that black border, which results in smaller file sizes and better classification and extraction.

    • Auto crop: Automatically straightens an image so that it is properly aligned and crops out background data. If an image does not need to be straightened or cropped, it is left untouched.

Note:Deskew and Remove black borders cannot be selected at the same time as Auto crop, because they are included in it. However, Auto crop can handle more skew than Deskew, and it might change the size of the image. (Remove black borders does not change the size of the image.) Auto crop also takes more time.

  4. To keep copies of the unprocessed image files (before the image enhancement features are applied), select Keep original image file if enhanced and specify a location for the files.

Note: Selecting Delete original color image under Image variant settings deletes the large, processed color image.

  5. To remove all blank pages found in a document, select Delete blank pages.

Or, to remove only blank back pages, select Delete blank pages first, and then Back pages only.

  6. Selecting Enhance PDF files may be advantageous if these files contain images or other graphics. Text-only PDF files usually do not need enhancing.

If needed, you can now specify threshold settings for color images.
