Alphabetic or numeric fields to be interpreted are called character fields. A character field can contain handwritten characters, machine printed characters, or both. The character string to be interpreted must be contained entirely within the boundaries of the field.
Everything within the field is interpreted except preprinted characters already in place when you define the field. (FORMS surrounds such preprinted characters with exclusion rectangles when you define the field.)
