Certain details of field definitions can be changed even if a form definition is Active and is being used in production. However, most changes to an active form definition require the following steps:
Check whether the database contains any forms of the type you want to edit. (Instructions.) If it does, finish processing all forms of that type or remove them from the databases.
Change the status of the form definition to Inactive. (Instructions.)
Make the required changes.
Reactivate and resave the form definition.
Resave the form definition by clicking Save.
You can now use the revised form definition as usual.
