Web Capture Service

Web Capture Service is a client-side application that enables Tungsten TotalAgility to scan documents directly from a web browser.

Web Capture Service also allows to import supported image types from the storage. For more information, see Scanning documents and Importing files.

The Web Capture Service installation is triggered when you use the Scan create new job form, Scan form, or any form containing the Web capture control. If Web Capture Service is already installed, no action is required. If the service is not installed or its version is outdated, a message appears prompting you to install or update the application.

To view the Web Capture Service version, right-click the icon in the Windows system tray and select About.

After the installation is complete, refresh the Scan client page to enable the scan controls and options. The Web Capture Service icon TotalAgility appears in the Windows system tray.

Web Capture Service forward compatibility

The Web Capture Service forward compatibility mode allows older versions of the service to work with new Capture Client. However, this forward compatibility is limited, which means if the Web Capture Service version is lesser than the minimum compatible version, TotalAgility will still require Web Capture Service client update even if forward compatibility mode is enabled.

We recommend using this mode only when necessary, as older versions of the Web Capture Service do not include the latest bug fixes and features, which may result in unpredictable behavior.

The Web Capture Service compatibility mode option can be enabled only in TotalAgility Designer. Refer to System settings in the Tungsten TotalAgility Designer Help for more information.

  • If you select "Web Capture Service compatibility mode", you can dismiss the warning with suggestion to use latest version and if the current Web Capture Service version is compatible with the current Tungsten TotalAgility version, you can scan and import the documents.

  • If you select "Web Capture Service compatibility mode" and "Skip alert message for the mismatched Web Capture Service and Capture Client version", no warning message is displayed even when an older Web Capture Service (but a compatible) version exists.

  • If Web Capture Service is not installed or the version is incompatible, the import options and scan controls are disabled on the Scan client form.

Web Capture Service backward compatibility

Along with forward compatibility, the Web Capture Service also maintains backward compatibility with up to three recent Tungsten TotalAgility releases. For example, the Web Capture Service from Tungsten TotalAgility 2025.2 is compatible with the following server versions: Tungsten TotalAgility 8.1 , 8.0, and 7.11.

Backward compatibility is enabled by default and does not require any additional configuration.
