Adjusting brightness and contrast levels

To adjust brightness and contrast in a scanning specification:

  1. On the Configuration tab of the Administration module, expand System specifications.

  2. Click Scanners.

  3. In the right pane, double-click the appropriate scanner.

  4. Select General > Scanning specifications.

  5. Select a scanning specification and click Properties.

  6. Select Image > Brightness and contrast.

  7. Under Brightness, move the slider to the left to decrease brightness (for images that are particularly light) or to the right to increase brightness (for images that are particularly dark). The default setting is suitable for documents with black text on a white or lightly colored background.

  8. Under Contrast, move the slider to the left to decrease contrast or to the right to increase contrast. Higher settings are better for documents with solid lines. The default setting is suitable for documents with black text on a white or lightly colored background.

  9. Optional: Select Photo mode. If an image has a background color at the top of the page that differs from the background color on the rest of the page, the resulting image can be of poor quality. In photo mode, this problem is avoided because the scanner constantly readjusts itself during scanning. The disadvantage is that lines and characters can become rough or uneven, which negatively affects character recognition.

  10. Optional: Select Auto brightness to have the brightness automatically adjusted.

  11. Optional: Select Auto contrast to have the contrast automatically adjusted.

Note: If you use Virtual ReScan (VRS), the selected VRS profile controls the brightness, contrast and auto brightness settings. These options are disabled in the scanning specification, and the values shown are those defined in the VRS profile.
