Setting the image quality and file size of scanned images

FYI, SCG refers to this topic by name.

FYI, the intro paragraph and the tips are repeated in Advanced Solution Design. So if you edit here, edit there, too.

Good classification and extraction in DOCUMENTS depends on good image quality. It is therefore important to get the best possible images coming into DOCUMENTS. We recommend that you tweak image improvement settings on the scanner side, which places less of the image improvement burden on the Enhance activity.

To set the image quality in a scanning specification:

  1. On the Configuration tab of the Administration module, expand System specifications.

  2. Click Scanners.

  3. In the right pane, double-click the appropriate scanner.

  4. Select General > Scanning specifications.

  5. Select a scanning specification and click Properties.

  6. Select Image > Image quality.

  7. In the DPI box, select how many DPI (dots per inch) to scan.

Tip: ReadSoft recommends 300 DPI for most black-and-white scanning and 150 DPI for grayscale and color scanning.

Important: When scanning in color at 300 DPI, you must limit the batch size to a maximum of 40 pages. Failure to do so causes problems/errors during the Enhance activity.

  8. Under Bit depth, select the appropriate level. Black and white is usually appropriate. See this topic for details.

  9. Under Image quality and file size, select the suitable option. (This is not available if Black and white is selected under Bit depth.)

Note: The DPI setting also affects the file size. The more DPI, the larger the file.
