Table fields

For user-defined document types, there are two ways to access table data; detected tables and AI table fields. Table detection is required for both detected tables and AI table fields.

For predefined document types, only table fields are available. The table fields in predefined document types are not available for user-defined document types.

Automatic table detection is used to extract all tables. The table detection step is performed after recognition and uses the OCR results from the recognition provider as input. By default, Tungsten table detection uses the input from the selected recognition provider to detect tables. The exception is if the Tungsten with Layout recognition provider is selected. For more information, see Configure processing settings.

The following list explains the different table types:

Detected tables:

The system automatically detects tables for a user-defined document type. Detected tables are available for export only, and no field is created for them, so you cannot apply formatting and validation to those tables or their columns. You can however, use the exported JSON in a downstream implementation.

During solution design and testing, if one or more table is detected on a document, this is displayed in the Auto Detected Tables tab.

If you want the table data reviewed during production, you can convert a detected table into an AI table field by selecting Add as AI table field.

AI table fields:

AI tables are available for user-defined document types and also use table detection. However, they require you to provide a description about the expected structure of a table and its columns.

A corresponding AI table field is created in the list of configured fields. Users are able to fully interact with AI tables during activities in the workflow, and it is possible to edit the field properties to apply validation and formatting to the table and its columns.

During solution design and testing, table detection is performed for user-defined document types and AI tables are displayed on the Tables tab only, while other detected tables are listed on the Auto Detected Tables tab.

Table fields:

Table fields are available for predefined document types only and are available in the list of configured fields. Users are able to fully interact with table fields during activities in the workflow, but it is not possible to apply validation or formatting.

During solution design and testing for predefined document types, table detection is performed and table fields are displayed on the Tables tab. There is no Auto Detected Tables tab for these document types.
