Content managers
Content managers are the programs associated with specific file types, designated by their extensions, such as PDF, PNG, TIF, and so on. These programs vary, depending on your specific business practices and software preferences, and help PSIsafe load the proper application when you attempt to preview or edit your content. To access the Managers page, you must have the Managers section permission under Management within your user profile (User Settings) or log in as the system administrator.
The Managers homepage displays a list of your content managers by name, and their associated program paths in two columns. To search for a specific manager in a long list, use the Quick Search field at the bottom of the screen. Click Add or Edit to begin the content manager setup. Then, perform the following actions.
Step 1. Details
- Enter a name for the manager (such as Access, PDF, Excel).
- Select the type from the list. The type tells
PSIsafe
what type of document this manager is responsible for. There are currently ten different content types.
- Audio: Any sort of audio file such as MP3 or WAV.
- Electronic Form: Adobe PDF Forms with fillable form fields.
- Hyper Text: A web page (HTML, MHT, XML).
- Image: Any type of image file (Tiff, JPG, PNG).
- Text: Any plain text file (TXT).
- Video: Any sort of video file (MP4, MOV, AVI).
- Word-processing: Any sort of electronic document created by a word processor or spreadsheet program (DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX).
- Message: A Microsoft Outlook file (MSG).
- Word Merge: A specific type of Word document that uses the Microsoft Word Merge functions to link PSIsafe folder indexes to Word Merge fields.
- Other: Any other content type that does not fit the categories above.
- Click Disable if you want to disable the content manager.
- Enter the file extension that the defined manager will control in the Extensions section. You can enter multiple
extensions for the same manager. For example, an image manager can view TIF, JPG, and PNG, and many other common file types.
Enter the extension name and click Add.
To remove an extension from the list, click the extension in the list box and click Remove.
- Programs: The entries in these fields apply globally to all users by default, unless otherwise specified in a
local manager (see Step 2).
In Microsoft Windows, under , extensions are associated with specific application paths on your connected drives. To start the program associated in Default Programs, click Use Windows File Association.
To specify the path location instead, keep in mind that this location must be the same on all workstations attempting to access your PSIsafe installation. Type the path, such as C:\Program Files (x86)\Company\Program\Program.exe, and the manager will be associated with the .exe file in this location.
- Parameters: Specify any parameters that need to be defined for the manager to launch the program properly.
Parameters allow multiple documents to be opened in the same program. The following is a list of available parameters and their
popular counterparts:
- Microsoft Word - /W
- Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader - /N
- Outlook - /F
- Excel - /X
Step 2. Local Managers
Occasionally, there may be instances where you may prefer a different version of a specific program, such as Adobe Acrobat instead of Adobe Reader. Additionally, you may want to use these programs only on certain workstations within the network, or on an associated system. PSIsafe supports localization of content managers to specific machines through Local Managers. A local content manager points a certain content type to a different program instead of the global document manager configured in Step 1.
- Click Add or Edit to define a local manager.
- In the Local host name field, enter the computer name to associate with the local manager. This is the same as the IPv6 Machine Name.
- Local Document Handling Programs: Enter the path to the local program, similar to defining the program on the Details screen in Step 1. The program defined here will only launch on the computer defined under the Local host name.
Step 3. Summary
Review the Content Manager settings provided in the summary, and click Finish to create the Content Manager.
To remove a local manager, click Delete.
