Distance Tool floating window

Measure icon

Select Edit > Measure > Distance Tool to open the Distance Tool floating window. First select options in the Settings and Markup panels, and then draw a line over a PDF object whose distance you want to measure. See Measure the distance between two points for details.

View tab

The View tab displays the current value of the measurement and the cursor location.

Measurement:

  • Distance: As you draw the line, the length is displayed dynamically.

  • Angle: Shows the current angle of the line you draw related to the X axis. No signs or direction of rotation are considered.

Cursor Location:

  • X: The X coordinate of the cursor position relative to the top left page corner.

  • Y: The Y coordinate of the cursor position relative to the top left page corner.

No signs are considered.

Settings tab

Use the Settings tab to set options for the measurement tool.

  • Perpendicular Measurement: Sets your lines to be drawn orthogonally (at right angles to the X or Y axis).

  • Caption style: Select where to display the measured value relative to the measured shape.

    • Inside

    • Top

  • Units Settings: Sets scaling for your measurement. A map or scale drawing should indicate its scale, such as 0.7 inches = 1 mile.

  • Snap Settings: Specify whether measurements should snap to points, edges, or arcs in your document. Adjust the snap-to Sensitivity and Snap color.

Markup tab

Use the Markup tab to add dimension and extension lines to the PDF, and to preserve measurement values in comments.

  • Use Markup: Stores the current measurements with your PDF document; otherwise, all results are discarded as soon as you start to draw a new line. In the text field, type the text to display in a pop-up comment window when you hover the cursor over this measurement.

  • Measuring Color: Set the color for your measurement lines.

  • Leader: Set line parameters to indicate the beginning and end of the measured object.

    • Set Length as Default: Click to keep these settings.

    • Length: Specify how far to place the dimension line from the object (not including Offset).

    • Extension: Specify how long the extension line should lie over the dimension line.

    • Offset: Determines how far away the measurement line appears from the cursor while drawing.
