Scan Settings window Scanner Settings tab
Use the this tab to configure scanner settings for the type of documents that you plan to scan. This tab includes settings for color mode, resolution, and paper size that are common to most scanners, as well as settings such as Deskew, Auto Crop, and blank image removal that help optimize image quality and processing.
Most of the settings on this window are disabled when you select a TWAIN driver scanner or when you select Scan from Device Vendor Dialog.
- Scanner Settings
-
-
Select a Scanner: Select your scanner from a list of installed TWAIN scanners.
-
Scan from Device Vendor Dialog: Replaces this window with the scanner window provided by the scanner manufacturer. Other than Select a Scanner, all the settings on this window are disabled when you select Scan from Device Vendor Dialog. Use the vendor interface to set options.
If the scanner driver supports blank page deletion, do not enable it.
-
Select a Profile: Select a profile from a list of scanner profiles.
-
- Profile Settings
-
You need special permissions to modify these settings. If you do not have the correct permissions, the settings appear grayed out. Settings that do not apply to the currently selected scanner also appear grayed out.
- Color
-
Select a color depth for the scanned image.
-
Black and White (Image Enhancement required): Produces a high-quality black and white image. This is only available when Image Enhancement Settings is selected.
-
Black and White: Sets output color to black and white. The file size for a black and white image is considerably smaller than it is for grayscale or color images.
-
Gray: Sets output color to grayscale. Compared to black and white, grayscale images usually result in slightly better quality at the cost of increased file sizes.
-
Color: Sets output to color. When you scan in color, the file size usually increases, but only slightly more than grayscale.
-
Automatic (Image Enhancement required): With automatic color detection, Tungsten TotalAgility determines if a scanned sheet is color or black and white, and processes the image accordingly. With automatic color detection, you do not need to separate color sheets from black and white sheets before scanning. This is only available when Image Enhancement Settings is selected.
-
- Resolution
-
Applies a dpi (dots per inch) setting to produce satisfactory image quality. Resolution is a measure of the image detail that the scanner can translate. The higher resolution settings support greater amounts of detail. Images scanned at high resolutions require more storage space than other images. Generally, 200 dpi is the recommended minimum for acceptable character recognition results.
- Size
-
Sets the paper size of the documents to be scanned. The list of available sizes depends on the specific scanner being used.
- Orientation
-
Specify the orientation of the source document.
-
Any: Enables either portrait or landscape orientation.
-
Portrait: Sets the paper orientation to Portrait so that the short edge of the paper is fed first into the scanner.
-
Landscape: Sets the paper orientation to Landscape so that the long edge of the paper is fed first into the scanner.
-
- Paper Source
-
Select the method used to feed sheets to the scanner.
-
Any: Enables either ADF or Flatbed as the paper source.
-
ADF: Scans a sheet from the scanner's automatic document feeder (ADF). ADF is useful for scanning stacks of loose sheets of a similar type, or for documents in good condition.
-
Flatbed: Scans a sheet from the scanner's flatbed. Flatbed scanning is useful for scanning thick or bound documents that cannot pass through the scanner, or for documents in fragile or poor condition.
-
- Duplex
-
Select single or double sided scanning.
-
Simplex: Scans only one side of a sheet.
-
Duplex: Scans both sides a sheet.
-
Automatic: Lets the application decide which type of scanning to perform.
-
Each Side as Separate Page: In duplex or automatic mode, saves the front and back sides of one sheet of paper as separate pages, but this setting is disabled in simplex mode.
-
- Apply Image Enhancement Settings
-
Select this option to use the following image settings:
-
Deskew: Automatically straightens skewed images.
- Auto Rotate: Automatically rotates the image to the correct orientation based on the direction that the text is facing when it passes through the scanner. Auto Rotate is effective if you are scanning sheets that contain only text and are not oriented uniformly.
-
Auto Crop: Crops an image to the actual paper size scanned, rather than the paper size selection.
-
Delete Blank Page: Automatically removes blank pages from the document.
-
OK: Saves the currently selected scanner as the default scanner and associates the vendor window and the profile settings with the current scanner. The next time you select this scanner (or use it as the default) all the settings are restored (unless Reset has been used).
Reset: Restores settings for the default profile to match the settings in the system profile. This is useful if you have modified the default profile and wish to revert to the system settings.
