Improve field extraction using existing fields

Use the procedure in this topic to improve field extraction by leveraging already configured fields in the current configured document type. If a document type has the same field on several documents, you can add the field once and then reference the original field on additional documents to improve extraction results.

When using this behavior, a completely new field is not added; instead, it adds a sample that references the existing field on a different document. You can have multiple samples of a field on several training documents, improving extraction results. This is useful if your test documents have different layouts or the keywords change between documents.

Before you begin

Before you use an existing field to improve field extraction, verify that you have at least one field available for the selected configurable document type.

Procedure

  1. On the Fields menu, select a document to define its fields.
  2. To lasso a field manually, toggle Hide suggested fields on to hide the suggested fields. Otherwise, select a suggested field.

    One of the following windows is displayed, depending on how the field was added originally:

    • Add field window: Displayed when a field is lassoed.

    • Add suggested field window: Displayed when a suggested field is selected.

    • Add Copilot Auto Extract field window: Displayed when a description-based field is added.

  3. From the New or existing setting, select Existing field.
  4. Select a value for an already defined field from the Name list.

    It is not possible to add bar codes here, as no bar code fields appear in this list.

    If the field you are adding requires an additional Keyword, you must first add the field here and then edit the field to add the new keyword.

  5. Optional. Expand the advanced settings to apply field formatting and validation to your extraction fields. You can edit these settings later.
  6. Select Save.

    The current field is added to the extraction training for the existing field.

  7. Repeat steps 2 to 6 to improve the extraction of fields on this and other document types.
