Create a Dynamic Stamp template

Although the default dynamic stamps in Power PDF are customizable, you can create custom template files that are better suited to your enterprise.

By default, Power PDF provides stamp templates that users can customize using the Stamps panel. The source files for these templates are in PDF format and found in C:\Program Files\Kofax\Power PDF 51\bin\Plug-Ins\Stamps\[language]\Digital, where [language] stands for the code of the installed UI language, such as ENU for English.

You may need administrator rights to add or delete files from this folder.

To create a template as a basis for your custom stamp, do one of the following:

  • Create a copy of an existing template file.

  • Create a new template: in Power PDF, select File > New > Blank PDF.

Open your template in Power PDF. Follow the instructions in this section to customize your template, then save the file to the above folder so that it appears as a stamp in the Dynamic Stamp dialog box.

Basic template settings

Every stamp has a PDF source template file, which contains the following main components:

  • Objects: They form the graphic layer of stamps, which enables users to change the color of specified areas of a stamp. When creating your template file, draw and customize objects as you would normally do with Draw Tools and Edit Object, then tag these objects to associate them with commands in the Dynamic Stamp dialog box. See Add objects for color customization.

  • Text: They are added as text fields to the templates. Move, resize, and customize them as you would normally do when working with Forms, then label them to associate them with commands in the Dynamic Stamp dialog box.

  • Exhibit numbers: In the template, they are created the same way as text fields. Stamps can only have one exhibit component. See Add text fields and exhibit properties.

The tables below summarize what template settings are required so that users can customize certain stamp areas using the Dynamic Stamp dialog box.

Associated command in Dynamic Stamp dialog box (for users)

Add a name to your stamp

Select File > Description and enter the preferred name for your custom stamp in the Title box.

Alternatively, press Ctrl+D to open the Document Properties dialog box containing the Title box.

Stamp names appear in the list under Stamp Template at the top of the dialog box.

Set the size of the stamp

Select Edit > Modify > Crop and draw a rectangle the size you want your stamp to be. Click Crop again to open the Crop Pages dialog box and finalize the operation.

Adjust the view so that the whole page is visible and the same size as your target document, so you can easily draw a rectangle of the right size for the stamp.

Size next to Preview is used to further adjust the size of the stamp for the current document.

Add objects for color customization

Use the table below to customize the object elements of your template. These settings enable users to change certain color settings of stamps.

Add new objects to your stamp

Insert objects as comments in the template file:

  1. Select Comment > Markup > Draw Tools.

  2. Insert the objects and customize them to your preference using Draw Tools and Edit Object.

    • Objects can overlap each other. Select Edit Object and use the Bring to Top or Send to Back commands on the Tools tab as needed.

    • Only vector graphics are suitable here, because it is their path elements that form a customizable layer. You can also add pixel-based images to the stamp as non-modifiable elements, but they may pose limitations on resizing and other operations.

  3. Select Advanced Processing > Process > Flatten File to build the objects (comments) into the template.

This operation clears the memory of Undo operations.

  4. After flattening the document, you can edit these objects by selecting Edit > Modify > Edit Object. If you add new objects, be sure to flatten the document again afterwards.

To make these objects customizable by users, see below on how to tag these objects to associate them with the right commands in the Dynamic Stamp dialog box.

Define an area within the stamp whose color the users can change (such as the frame)

Open the Tag panel from the Panel bar.

For tagged PDFs (existing templates), every Path under the Document tag corresponds to an object whose color can be customized by users.

For untagged PDFs (new templates):

  1. Right-click and select Create tags root.

  2. Right-click again and select New Tag.

  3. For Type, select Document.

  4. Right-click the tag you just created and select Find.

  5. In the Find Element dialog box, select Unmarked Content from the list and click Find.

  6. Click Find Next as needed and repeat this step until the required object is highlighted.

  7. Select Tag Element. A new Path (depending on the object type, the name might differ) appears under <Document>.

Users will not be able to change the color of objects that do not have "Path" as their tag name after tagging the template. This is the case with pixel graphics, which can nevertheless be used as non-modifiable elements.

Define an area as the background of the stamp

Open the Tag panel from the Panel bar.

For tagged PDFs (existing templates), every Path under the Figure tag corresponds to an object whose color can be customized by users.

For untagged PDFs (new templates):

  1. Right-click and select Create tags root.

  2. Right-click again and select New Tag.

  3. For Type, select Figure.

  4. Right-click the tag you just created and select Find.

  5. In the Find Element dialog box, select Unmarked Content from the list and click Find.

  6. Click Find Next as needed and repeat this step until the required object is highlighted.

  7. Select Tag Element. A new Path (depending on the object type, the name might differ) appears under <Figure>.

Users will not be able to change the color of objects that do not have "Path" as their tag name after tagging the template. This is the case with pixel graphics, which can nevertheless be used as non-modifiable elements.

Template areas that do not contain any objects appear transparent when the stamp is inserted in a document. To set the transparency of objects, use Transparency on the Tools tab after clicking Edit Object or Opacity after clicking Draw Tools (for markup objects before flattening).

Add text fields and exhibit properties

Use the table below to customize the text components of your template. These settings enable users to add custom text or an exhibit number to stamps.

Add a text field to your stamp

Select Forms > Form Elements > Text Field Tool and draw a rectangle the size you want your text field to be.

To make these fields customizable by users, see below on how to label these fields to associate them with the right commands in the Dynamic Stamp dialog box.

Set the properties of editable text fields

  1. Double-click the text field to show the Text Field Properties dialog box. Alternatively, right-click the text field and select Properties.

  2. In the Field Name box on the General tab, enter one of the following:

    • Text1: users can add text using the upper text box in the Dynamic Stamp dialog box.

    • Text2: users can add text using the middle text box.

    • Text3: users can add text using the lower text box.

    • Exhibit: see below for details.

Using any other name does not create active text fields in the Dynamic Stamp dialog box.

You can add four text fields to a template: one exhibit field and up to three plain text fields.

  3. Optionally, use the Default Value box under the Options tab to have a custom text appear to users in that text field. You can also insert the %DATE% and %TIME% macros here.

  4. Optionally, the tabs under Text Field Properties offer further customization options, including:

    • Use General > Attributes to set line and text properties.

    • Use Options > Alignment to adjust the position of text.

    • Select Multi-line to allow users to enter multiple lines of text. When this is disabled, the Enter button has no effect when the user presses it.

For more information, see Create and edit form fields.

Text with three input boxes, which are active or disabled depending on template settings.

Add exhibit properties to your stamp

For a stamp to have exhibit properties, one of the text fields must have Exhibit as their Field Name, which can be set under Field Properties > General after a double-click on the text field.

You can set only one text field as an exhibit item.

Among the existing stamp templates, the ones with exhibit properties have "exhibit" in their file name in the C:\Program Files\Kofax\Power PDF 51\bin\Plug-Ins\Stamps\[language]\Digital folder – but you can give any name to your custom template.
