Find & Replace

Use the Find & Replace tool to quickly search the text layer of PDF documents and replace phrases in one or more documents.

Select Edit > Modify > Edit Text to show the Text Format tab, which contains the Find & Replace tool and font, paragraph, and positioning settings. Clicking Edit Text also highlights all editable text with a bounding rectangle.

To use Find & Replace, the PDFs must be searchable with editable text content, such as text written with the Typewriter tool. You cannot search image-only PDFs and content in notes, text boxes, and other annotations.

Clicking Find & Replace opens a menu with the following options:

  • Find & Replace Current: Opens the Find and Replace dialog box. In the Find box, type the phrase to replace.

    • Match Case: Search only for phrases that are in the same case as the phrase you entered.

    • Match whole word only: Search for precise matches for the entire string of characters, including spaces.

Type the new phrase in the "Replace with" box then click Replace to replace one item or Replace All to replace all the instances in the document.

  • Find & Replace Multiple: In addition to the options above, you can do the following:

    • Add: Include additional PDF files in the search.

    • Add Folder: Include files in other folders in the search.

When you click Replace All, the Output Options dialog box appears. Here you can set the destination folder and file name for the new files. For more information, see Output Options.

When replacing phrases in the current document only, the Output Options dialog box does not appear, so make sure to keep a copy of the original document if needed.

When the preceding operations are complete, select Text Format > Close to return to the Home tab. The bounding rectangle surrounding the text is cleared.
