Add an OMR recognition profile

Use the procedure in this topic to add an OMR recognition profile to optimize the recognition of optical mark fields.

An OMR recognition profile performs zonal optical mark recognition. This means that recognition is performed only for a specific area of a document to determine whether a mark is present.

When configuring an OMR zone, you specify how much of the zone is filled in when marked.

Procedure

  1. On the Project tab, in the Configuration group, select Project Settings Project Settings icon.
  2. Select the Recognition tab to view the recognition settings.
  3. Select the Zone Profile button. A properties window is displayed.
  4. From the Page Recognition Method list, select OMR. (Default: OmniPage)

The OMR zone profile settings window is displayed.

  5. Configure the following settings:

    Result Texts

Select the results of an OMR field:

    Unmarked:

Returned when an OMR zone is unmarked. (Default: 0)

    Marked:

Returned when an OMR zone is marked. (Default: 1)

    Unsure:

Returned when an OMR zone is unsure. (Default: ~)

    Mode

    Select a mode value:

    Automatic:

Uses the default recognition engine settings to recognize marked zones. When selected, the Manual Mode group is disabled. (Default: Selected)

    Manual:

Overrides the default recognition settings. When selected, the Automatic Mode group is disabled.

  6. When the Mode is set to Automatic, configure the following Automatic Mode settings:

    Same size boxes

Select if all the boxes on your document are the same size. (Default: Cleared)

    Number of zones

An OMR zone can behave as a select one field or a select many field.

    • One checked zone: Only a single check box is selected during production. For example, a gender or title selection.

    • Many checked zones: More than one check box can be selected during production. For example, areas of interest on an application form. (Default: Selected)

  7. When Mode is set to Manual, configure the following settings Manual Mode settings::

    Blackness values for unmarked fields:

    Min. blackness

Minimum percentage that represents an unmarked field. (Default: 0)

    Max. blackness

Maximum percentage that represents an unmarked field. (Default: 15)

    Blackness values for marked fields:

    Min. blackness

Minimum percentage that represents a marked field. (Default: 20)

    Max. blackness

Maximum percentage that represents a marked field. (Default: 40)

  8. Optional. Rename the new profile so it has a descriptive name.
  9. Optional. Select OK to close the Project Settings window.
  10. Save the changes to your project.
