Document cannot be released while the user's computer is in Modern Standby

Users cannot release documents that are stored on their computer while the computer is in Modern Standby. In the Printix App, the documents are labeled Document is unavailable, or the release fails with Release document timed out.

Modern Standby is the sleep mode that most Windows 11 laptops and tablets use. The computer enters Modern Standby when the display turns off. This happens, for example, after the user locks the computer, closes the lid, or selects Sleep. It also happens when the computer is idle.

In Modern Standby, Windows gives the Printix Client little or no processor time, so Printix considers the computer offline. The release fails. The document is not printed later, when the user may no longer be at the printer.

How soon the computer goes offline depends on the hardware, the firmware, the Windows version, the Windows power settings, whether the computer runs on battery power or is plugged in, and how the computer connects to the network.

For example:

  • Starting from Printix Client version 2026.3.0.166, if documents are stored on the computer when a user locks it, the Printix Client asks Windows to keep the computer awake for 10 minutes before it enters Modern Standby. Windows may ignore the request. On battery power, Windows may put the computer in Modern Standby after as little as 5 minutes, or immediately if the user closes the lid.

To update computers to this version, see automatic updates or the Software page.

  • If the computer is plugged in, it stays awake for as long as the Windows power settings allow.

  • If the computer connects to the network only through a Wi-Fi connection that belongs to the signed-in user, the connection ends when the user signs out of Windows. The computer goes offline immediately.

Resolution: Set up cloud storage so that users can release documents while their computer is offline. A Printix Client on another computer in the printer's network still needs to be online to release the documents.
